Long-distance parenting is possible with virtual visits

Life’s circumstances sometimes lead to a parent being pulled away from their children. This can be due to a military deployment or the need to move for a job. No matter what causes the distance, parenting becomes a bit more challenging.

Fortunately, we live in a world that has many possibilities for keeping the parent in touch with their children, despite the miles between them. Using these options can strengthen your relationship with you children even when you can’t be there in person.

Many options

One of the most convenient options for many families is to use video chats to keep in touch. These apps allow you to chat with your children while being able to see them and they can see you. This real time option means you can read a toddler bedtime stories or help a teen with homework. You might even be able to offer your congratulations after a big game win.

Another method is texting. If your child can read, write and use a smartphone, you can use texting to get in touch with each other. You might also choose to make phone calls. Sometimes, emails or chats online can help you to keep in touch.

Challenge of time

A big challenge comes when you live in a different time zone than the child. When you are initiating or planning any virtual visits, you must think about the child’s time zone. Even if it means you have to get up in the middle of the night to contact your child at a time when it is convenient for them, you should do so willingly. It might help if you know the child’s school and activity schedule so you are aware of the best times to call.

Team effort

You and your ex will likely have to work together to ensure the child has virtual visits with you. It is usually best to have the requirements for these visits put into the custody order. For example, you and the child should have uncensored communication. The more detail you have in the child custody case, the more likely you will be able to ensure you get the visits due to you.

Each child custody case is unique. Be sure that you think carefully about what will work for you and your children so you can maintain and strengthen the relationship with them.
